2003 - Tampa Florida
In it's third year, the "Harris Cup" really stepped it up this year increasing the prize money to $10,000.00 and gaining national television exposure. The Golf Channel was on hand to capture the excitement and ran a feature on the tournament on Golf Central. Scott Cherry of Rapid City, South Dakota had his hole in one putt nominated for "Putt of the Week" on the Golf Channel's Golf Central. His putt came in tied for second behind the legendary Tiger Woods.
Eric Barnhart played consistently in the two-round competition with a total score of 85 (43/42) to win top honors and the first place prize of $5,000.00 along with the signature Harris Cup trophy. Coming in second and taking home $3,000.00 after a playoff was Ben Golden. Rich LaRussa, who was leading after the first round of competition tied with Golden for 2nd but took three putts to Golden's two on the first hole of the playoff to finish in third place. Last year's winner, Tim Heinly, finished in fourth place.
The players were treated like the champions they are. Leader Board of Tampa, a company specializing in regulation golf tournaments, provided the computer scoring and photos of the tournament on the big screen for all to enjoy during a catered lunch. "This is miniature golf, but it is also a legitimate tournament," said Sophia Disney, Marketing Director for Harris Miniature Golf. "Each year we make improvements and grow the tournament and we will continue to do so."
The Harris Cup National Miniature Golf Championships is the culmination of a year of local qualifying tournaments held at miniature golf courses around the country that have been built by Harris Miniature Golf Courses, Inc., the nations largest designer and builder of miniature golf courses. "Bringing national exposure to miniature golf like the Golf Channel coverage of the Harris Cup will help to strengthen the industry," said Rich Lahey, President of Harris.
